On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, several experts stated that the expansion of the work-from-home (WFH) post-COVID-19 pandemic, along with stress and a poor diet, are the major factors behind the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes among young adults. They added that the incidences of diabetes have risen by 20% among individuals in their 20s in the past 2-3 years.

Dr. Kausar Usman, senior faculty of the medicine department at KGMU, explained that after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, many young people working from home do not do any exercise and eat processed food items that are high in carbs and fat. This along with increased stress at the personal and family level, job insecurity, series of online meetings, and the loss of loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic have disrupted their body or biological clock.

Dr. Mayank Somani, chief consultant of endocrinology and diabetes at Apollo Medical Center Super Speciality Hospital, advised that diabetic patients should monitor blood sugar levels and maintain a chart to avoid complications. Additionally, everyone should follow the mantra of walking a few steps every 30 minutes to improve metabolism.
